Summer Days

Summer is right around the corner and for me it can't get here fast enough. I am tired of these breezy days and ready for warm sunny days so I can go to the lake for some fun. I like to ride jet skis as well as take my boat out on the water. I spend most of my summer days on the lake waters but haven't been out yet due to the cold weather Colorado has been having. This weekend won't be much different as the weather is expected to stay in the high 60's and low 70's, not exactly lake weather. So hopefully this weather will warm up so I can enjoy my lake activities. I am sure there will be a lot of lake activities going on for the rest of the country this Memorial Weekend. To the outdoor enthusiast,

If any of you live here in Colorado, you may already know that if you wish to hunt any big game, it can be a lengthy process if you don't own any private land or at the very least, a lease.  But the close of season for most popular animals is here and although to most hunters it may be the off season, for some, it is just the beginning.  June 15th is the start of season for the prairie rattlesnake!  I've only been in close contact with a handful of rattlesnakes in my day, but I do plan to try my hand in catching a few this year.  I’ve invited some people to come with and so far the only takers are Trevor, and possibly Dale. 

The daily bag limit is 3 snakes and total possession is 6.  I plan on constructing a fancy-pants snake hook out of some used gardening tools, as well as a storage tank consisting of a 10 gallon bucket, a pillow case, and a bungee cord to keep it closed.  I haven’t decided on my method of take yet but I’ll decide when I get there.  I will have with me a hook and bucket (because a live take will yield the most usable meat and skin), a hatchet, and a .22LR semi-auto rifle in case things get hairy.  I think some thick leather, possibly rubber boots may not be a bad idea either.

A few things to note about rattlesnakes are that they can strike about 3/4 of their total body length.  This means 8 footers can getcha from 6 feet away!  It is a good thing that the Prairie Rattler usually only gets to 3-4 feet.  Also, after killing a snake, you should still stay away from the head for about 24 hours because they still have some reflex functions after death and you can still be bitten and injected with venom long after death. Extreme caution should always be used.  Have fun, be safe, and don’t get bitten!

Make Room

The past few days, Connie and Doreen (the lovely ladies in charge of shipping) have been hard at work moving, stacking, tossing and rearranging to make room in our warehouse. Why? Because we're bringing in a spiffy new line of personal and kitchen scales. Connie and Doreen did a great job of organizing and finding extra space here and there for these new SOEHNLE scales and, I gotta say, I'm super excited for their arrival. There are some pretty cool scales in this mix like:

Tornadoes, Hail, and Rain! Oh My!

Last Wednesday we got pummeled with hail and rain for hours here at Old Will. We even got to see the last few seconds of a funnel cloud as it crawled back up into The Nothing. The warehouse flooded a bit, while a little annoying, nothing got ruined. After the shoes got soaked getting to the car, it was a hopeful drive. Hoping that the hail didn't reach our houses, gardens freshly planted:( The garden, for me at least, was toast.

Of course none of this is bad at all when you consider the massive tornado outbreak that the south had back in April. Or the tragedy that struck Joplin, Missouri yesterday.

Today we had a good little storm hit the Denver area, but of course it slid a little too far east. Then another little cell gave us a quick soak and some ultra close lightning, nothing too bad. Hopefully we'll get a ton more storms this year to ease off the drought. Above is a radar shot of the storm that just missed us. We're located by the little red star in the upper left hand corner of the image.

Scales & More Scales

We were having a discussion the other day about how we should title our products on our Website. Right now, we have the manufacturer and the product name. My Weigh UltraShip 35 for example. We threw around the idea of adding additional info to the titles like kitchen scale and postal scale; you know, words that describe what kind of scale it is. So instead of My Weigh UltraShip 35 we'd put My Weigh UltraShip 35 Shipping Scale. Great idea, right? Wrong. The problem we ran into is that almost every scale can be used in more than one application. For example, a kitchen scale can also be used as a postal scale, a soap making scale, a small pet scale and much more. We're worried that if we name something a shipping scale it will take away from all other uses. Since this subject comes up often, I try to make it known to as many people I can. What better way to let you guys know about scales than on our scale blog? I know, pretty smart. Soooo, let’s begin…

Let’s say you’re looking for a scale to weigh your dog. You come across a scale that is the perfect size, has just enough capacity and the best resolution but, it’s labeled as a baby scale. What do you do? Get it, of course! You’ve found a scale that will do everything you need. There is no reason to pass it up because of its name. Sure it’s labeled a baby scale but, that’s just because the manufacturer picked that name.

Example number two. You need two scales, one to weigh out ingredients for your soap recipe and another to weigh small packages to send to your granny in West Virginia. You only really have room for one scale so…You find a scale that will measure down to 0.1 ounce and up to however many pounds you need. Who cares if it’s called a shipping scale? You can use it to weigh your ingredients and your goodies.

The point I’m trying to make is, just because a scale is named one thing, it doesn’t mean you can’t use it for another. Here is an article with a little more info for finding a scale for your needs: How To Find The Right Digital Scale.

Take the Challenge

We've all heard the sayings - "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," "Don't complain because you don't have. Enjoy what you've got," or "Stuff happens." But really, who doesn't complain once and awhile?  I come from a generally negative background.  If there was an award for criticism, believe me my relatives would be consecutive winners.  If it rained on a family vacation, it wasn't because of high/low pressure systems moving in, it was because we were doomed with bad luck. So, I guess you could say a little of their attitude rubbed off on me at times.  Recently, one of my friends suggested I read The No Complaining Rule by Jon Gordon.  Now, I'm not one for cheesy motivational books, but surprisingly so far so good.  The message of the book is simple, stop complaining and do something about it or don't let your griping have an effect on your day.  I still do my fair share of moaning and groaning, but I think there's definitely something to be said about not letting things get to you.  So, take The No Complaining Rule challenge and try to go one day without complaining and see how you feel, after all Tuesday is way too early in the week to be wearing your crabby pants!

Friday The 13th

It's Friday the 13th so I see it fitting that I blog about my favorite genre of movie, horror movies! I don't know what it is about horror movies but I absolutely enjoy a good horror movie more than any other genre of movie. Some of my favorites are the typical franchise type movies such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I also liked a lesser known movie The Descent where a group of explorers go in a cave only to be met by a hideous creature that has a taste for human flesh. Pretty creepy movie if you ask me. I would suggest watching it if you haven't already. Probably my favorite type of horror movie is the Zombie genre. Oh yes I LOVE zombie movies and can't get enough of them. You name the Zombie movie and I have seen it. I also enjoy the more goofy type of Zombie movies such as Zombieland where a Twinkie is all the rage. I even enjoyed a TV series called The Walking Dead and I typically don't watch tv series but I am glad I watched The Walking Dead series as I thought it was an excellent show.  There are many more horror movies I could mention but time is limited so Happy Friday everyone!
